There’s a great deal of effort put into growing and maintaining plants – the last thing you would want to do is leave them behind when you move.

At UNITS Moving and Portable Storage of Wilmington we like to help our customers by offering valuable moving tips, so you can have a seamless and enjoyable move. That’s why in today’s article, we’re explaining how to move your beloved plants safe and securely.

Know The Season

Plant roots can be sensitive to extreme temperatures. That’s why it’s best to plan your move for the fall or spring. Although it’s not impossible to move plants during the summer and winter, you’re at a greater risk of killing your plants. A little bit of planning can make all of the difference.

Trim The Excess

Plants consume energy like many other living organisms. So the larger they are, the more energy they need. That’s why we suggest giving your plants a trim before you move. Ensure to remove all wilting and dead leaves; these can still consume energy that the rest of the plant needs to thrive. Trimming and pruning can also help keep your plant alive longer.

Hydrate Thoroughly

Your plants also need to be thoroughly hydrated before you think about uprooting them. If they are dehydrated when uprooting, it can put a lot of stress on them and cause them to wither during their travels. So, the night before you plan on uprooting your plants, give them a thorough hydration. That will allow the soil and roots enough time to soak up all the water and replenish themselves.

Uproot With Care

Uprooting is not an easy process for your plants. To help reduce the stress on your plants, you need to take care when uprooting them. We recommend digging a wide circle using your trowel and then gently lifting the plant out of the ground keeping a healthy amount of soil attached. You will need an appropriate-sized pot to place the plant in after uprooting.

Quickly Replant

This last step is the most crucial to ensure your plants survive the move, and that is you must replant them as soon as possible. If you can pack your plants last and already have your spots ready at the new place, you should be good to go and simply plant them the day you arrive. If not, ensure to plant them the following day.
