Whether it’s across the country or just down the street, moving to a new home is a very exciting time. When you have pets, moving to a new home can be very stressful, for both you and your furry friend. Pets are very sensitive to their surroundings and get very easily stressed or spooked during a big move, which might make them act differently than they otherwise normally would.
Here are our tips for moving with pets:
1. Make sure your pets are microchipped or equipped with an up-to-date collar with your new address and current contact information. Stress from a move, coupled with unfamiliar surroundings might make your pet more likely to run away.
2. For long distance moves, plane to visit your veterinarian before you move for a check up to make sure your pet is ready to travel. If they’re prone to car sickness, talk to your vet about ways to prevent that during the long car ride. Do some research beforehand to find pet-friendly hotels along your travel route and be sure to stop frequently so your pet has plenty of bathroom breaks and fresh water to stay hydrated.
3. On moving day, it’s important to keep your pet away from where all the action is happening. Secure them in a crate or kennel away from where the moving crew will be working, as the loud noises and strangers in your home will likely agitate them.
