4 Things You Should Never Pack When Moving

Packing for your move? You may be excited to start packing everything in your home, but don’t be in too quick of a rush. Before you start packing for your move, you should know that there are certain things you shouldn’t pack when moving. Certain items like valuables should be kept on your persons at all times during a move and other items might perish or even be dangerous. 

Here is a list of four things you should never pack:

1. Valuables and Documents

You should always keep important items like money, important documents, family heirlooms, and the like with you at all times during a relocation. These are items that you do not want to get accidentally damaged or part with during your relocation. If you have a safety deposit box, make sure to transfer the contents to one at a bank close to your new home. 

2. Dangerous Goods and Flammables

Packing hazardous goods is not only prohibited by moving companies, but they can also cause detrimental damage to your belongings as well. There’s a good reason these items are not allowed and it’s because it they can cause harm to you and others. 

You should never pack the following dangerous items when moving:

• Guns and ammunition
• Black powder
• Lighter fluids
• Matches
• Acids, ammonia
• Gasoline, kerosene
• Petroleum products
• Yard equipment containing fuel
• Motor oil
• Lamp oil
• Antifreeze
• Disinfectants
• Pesticides, fertilizer, weed killers
• Poisons
• Paint, paint thinners
• Paint-related materials
• Nail polish, nail polish remover
• Aerosol cans, deodorants
• Charcoal
• Pool chemicals
• Fire extinguishers
• Propane tanks
• Car batteries
• Cleaning supplies, bleach
• Liquor

3. Perishable Items

Never pack any perishable food when moving. The week prior to your move, you should think about clearing out your fridge of items like frozen foods, dairy and produce. If you have extra food, certain items can be donated to your local food bank. Always avoid packing perishable food items as they can rot during transportation and attract small animals and insects.

4. Medications

Prior to your move, you should always transfer your prescriptions to your new pharmacy. You should always keep current prescriptions with you at all times in case of emergencies. The same goes to your four-legged friend. You should always keep any medications your pet might need with you during your move.
