You’ve bought the house, you’ve bought 50 moving boxes, and you’ve started packing everything up. Now all that’s left to do is pick a moving date. For many people making the leap to picking a moving date can be one of the hardest parts of the moving process. Here are a few things to keep in mind before deciding on a date:
Closing Date
If you’re moving to a new house, you probably want to have already closed on your new home before you vacate your old house (although this isn’t always possible or realistic). If you have any overlap between when you close on your new house and when you have to vacate your old house, you should choose a time during that overlap period so that you aren’t feeling rushed during the packing / moving process. Renting a portable storage container will let you take your time and pack as you go along. If you don’t have an overlap period, you might have to pack and move in one day, which will make your decision a lot easier.
Cost of Moving
If you’re trying to move at a peak time, like weekends, holidays, at the beginning / end of the month, you’re likely going to encounter a lot more competition when it comes to securing movers, renting a truck, or other factors. If possible, you’ll want to move during a time of day that is low traffic, so you don’t have the added stress of sitting in rush hour traffic during your move.
Other Factors
Are you starting a new job that you need to be already moved for? Do your children need to be in their new school by a certain date? Is there bad weather, like hurricanes, monsoons, or blizzards being forecasted in the near future? All of these factors should play into your decision.
