If gardening is a passion of yours, you understand the amount of time, money, and effort that goes into you. And if you’re moving in the future, you may be wondering if it’s possible to take all of your hard work along for the journey.
The answer is, you absolutely can!
All you need to do is follow these tips from UNITS Moving and Storage of Orange County.
The weather plays a vital role in the safety of your plants. Severe temperatures and conditions can cause damage to the roots of plants. That’s why if it is possible, try moving in the spring and fall. The summer and winter offer the least ideal conditions.
Trimming and pruning is standard practice to help keep plants healthy. But it’s especially crucial when uprooting and moving. The larger your plants are, the more energy they need to survive. Trimming them down will make them easier to move and help them conserve energy. So, remove all of those dead leaves and any excessive foliage.
To help ease the stress of the move on your plants, you want to ensure they are as healthy as possible. Following your watering routine the night before you uproot them can help you achieve this. That will allow plenty of time for the soil and roots to soak up the water. The more nourished they are, the safer it is to uproot them.
When it’s finally time to uproot your plants, grab your trowel and appropriately sized planters. With your trowel, you’re going to dig a circle around the plant and its roots. Once you finish digging, carefully lift your plant out of the ground. Ensure a healthy amount of soil stays on the roots. That will help protect them during the transition. Finally, place the plant in the container and repeat the same process on each plant.
And last but not least, you need to replant all of them as soon as you move in. The longer your plants stay out of the ground, the more at risk they become for decaying and wilting. To help speed the process along, plan out where you will place each plant before moving them. It’s even more ideal to have their spot dug out and ready to go before you uproot them. If possible, make your plants the last thing you move from your current home, so they don’t have to spend much time out of the soil.
