In a heartwarming gesture of community support, UNITS® Moving and Portable Storage of Northeast OH, Cleveland & Akron has stepped up to contribute to the Chagrin Historical Society’s ambitious expansion project. The company has generously donated a container to aid in the construction of the Barriball Carriage House, a pivotal addition to the Chagrin History Center’s offerings.

The Barriball Carriage House project marks an exciting chapter in preserving and celebrating Chagrin Falls’ rich history. With plans to demolish an old garage and erect a new carriage house, the Chagrin Historical Society aims to provide a fitting home for cherished relics, including a 1957 Chevy police car replica and an original 1949 Chagrin Falls firetruck.

Beyond serving as a mere storage facility, the Barriball Carriage House will serve as a dynamic educational hub, showcasing exhibits that delve into the captivating history of Chagrin. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the legacies of the Chagrin Falls Police Department and the Chagrin Valley Fire Department, gaining insights into their pivotal roles in shaping the community.

One of the most intriguing features of the expansion project is the incorporation of the Church Blacksmith Shop, a nod to Chagrin Falls’ early settlers. The Church family, pioneers who settled in the area in 1834, were skilled blacksmiths whose contributions left an indelible mark on the town’s history. The Church Blacksmith Shop will not only showcase historical artifacts such as Henry Church’s workbench and over fifty blacksmithing tools but also offer immersive educational experiences for visitors of all ages.

Moreover, the inclusion of an outdoor forge manned by a trained blacksmith promises to captivate audiences, providing firsthand demonstrations that bring history to life. This interactive element is poised to engage students and enthusiasts, fostering a deep appreciation for Chagrin Falls’ heritage. This hands-on approach educates and inspires a renewed interest in the artistry and craftsmanship of the past.

The journey towards realizing the Barriball Carriage House has been a collaborative effort, with the Chagrin Falls Historical Society & Museum spearheading the initiative. In 2022, the society sought financial support from the State of Ohio to fund the construction of the carriage house and blacksmith shop, underscoring their commitment to preserving and promoting the town’s legacy.
