Fish make for wonderful pets, providing us with beauty and companionship. However, moving with fish can be a real challenge. As a pet owner, you may be reluctant to part with your aquatic friends during a move. Our guide provides useful tips and tricks to make moving with your fish as smooth as possible.
To move your fish, you will need containers, trash bags, packing boxes, packing tape, and newspaper or bubble wrap for padding.
Before your move, change 1/5 of the water every day for a week. Avoid feeding your fish 48 hours before the move to keep the water clean. If you’re traveling by air, consider airline requirements and the pressure your fish will experience. Open the containers every 4-5 hours to change the air. Purchase a healing agent from your local pet store in case your fish becomes bruised en route.
Remove filters, heaters, thermometers, and decorations from your tank. Drain as much water as possible without disturbing your fish. Disperse your fish into as many secure containers as possible. Large or untamed fish should be placed in a single container. Place the containers in trash bags to prevent leaks. Drain the remainder of the water and remove the gravel. Load everything into your vehicle safely.
Remove tanks from boxes and place them on a steady table or platform. Wipe the inside of the tank with a moist sponge or towel. Fill your tank ¾ full with water at 75-80°. Add neutralizers to the water. Place gravel, equipment, and decorations in the tank. Release fish and turn on filters, heaters, and other equipment. Feed your fish as usual.
Moving with fish can be challenging, but with proper planning and preparation, it’s possible to move your fish safely and comfortably. By following our guide, you’ll ensure that your aquatic friends arrive at their new home happy and healthy. With a little extra care, your fish can enjoy their new surroundings just as much as you do. Contact UNITS of Northern Virginia today for more moving tips!
