Sprained ankles, strained backs, and joint pain – oh my! Moving can be quite a dangerous activity. Shuffling heavy furniture in and out of homes is one of the fastest ways to injure yourself during your move.

To ensure you don’t experience these same mishaps, UNITS® of Greater Philadelphia & Delaware is here to share ten tips to prevent moving day injuries.

1. Stretch and Prep

Moving day is similar to having a long day at the gym. That means you will want to ensure your body is prepared for the huge task lying ahead. Stretching thoroughly and getting a good night’s rest should do the trick.

2. Use Proper Equipment

The less strain you have to put on your body, the better. That’s why you should have proper moving equipment ready and on hand for the day. Furniture, floor, and appliance dollies can make a significant difference. Moving heavier pieces won’t put as much strain on the body with these pieces of equipment.

3. Don’t do it on Your Own

Enlisting the help of friends and local moving services can help take some of the stress and strain off of your plate. We can help at UNITS by giving you one less step to do. When you use one of our portable storage containers, we transport the container to your new home for you.

4. Clear the Way

Bumping into boxes and furniture strewn across your home is one of the quickest ways to injure yourself on moving day. That’s why you should clear a direct path from where you are moving your belongings from the house to outside. Having a clear path will allow you to move faster and easier. You won’t have to worry about tripping over anything.

5. Lift properly

The way you lift something can greatly impact whether you injure yourself or not. Always remember to never bend forward. To lift correctly, you will want to squat down and pick up the item, using your knees to bring yourself back up. It’s the safest way to lift boxes and furniture.

6. Pack Light

It’s easy to feel as though you should cram as much stuff into one box as you possibly can. But that’s the perfect recipe for a moving injury. Pack your boxes to a comfortable weight; this will also help prevent them from breaking during the move.

7. Wear Braces

If you have a prior injury to any joints or your back, this tip is for you. Moving day is the time to break out your body braces. If you suffer from pain or strain in the knees, elbows, or back remember to wear your brace and take it slow.

8. Closed-toe Shoes are a Must

One of the worst feelings in the world is something dropping on your foot. But there is an easy way to reduce the impact. You must wear closed-toe shoes on moving day. That means no flip-flops, slides, sandals, or walking barefoot.

9. Don’t Rush

There’s rarely an instance where rushing can lead to a good outcome. The same goes for moving days. One of the easiest ways to avoid a moving day injury is by taking it slow. Rushing can lead to tripping, dropping boxes, and pulling muscles.

10. Take Breaks

Last but not least, don’t be afraid to take breaks as often as you need to. It’s good to know your limits when you want to prevent moving day injuries.
