Plants are one of the most popular exterior and interior decorations in history. Whether it’s succulents, blooming flowers, or leafy bushes, they add a special touch to a space like nothing else. But what happens with all of these plants when you have to move?
Don’t worry, UNITS Moving and Storage of Central Iowa is here to offer some practical tips for moving plants.
Considering the season you’re moving in can be the difference between healthy thriving plants and a withering mess in your vehicle. The roots of a plant are sensitive to the extreme temperatures of summer and winter, so if you plan on moving with plants, try to do it in the spring and fall when the weather is less severe.
The bigger the plant you have, the more energy it needs to thrive. To help your leafy friends survive the move and conserve energy, we recommend pruning and trimming them. This process is also one of the best ways to keep your plants healthier in the long run.
Hydration can also ensure your plants stay alive during the move. The night before you plan on uprooting your plants, go ahead and do your watering routine. That will allow the soil and the roots to soak up the water and be ready for the long journey.
This next step needs to be done with the utmost care, uprooting. It’s a process that will put a great amount of stress on the plant itself, so you need to do it as carefully as possible. First, you will want to dig a wide circle around the plant with a trowel. Next, steadily lift the plant, ensuring a healthy amount of soil stays attached to the roots. And finally, place it in an appropriately sized pot for transport.
Once you arrive at your new home, you will want to replant your plants immediately. To ensure that your plants aren’t out of place for too long, we suggest packing your plants last. It’s also a good idea to plan out and dig up where you will place the plants before you move in. These two tips can ensure your plant will survive the move.
