Boxes vs Closed Containers

This may seem like a minuscule detail compared to the myriad of other decisions you have to make with a storage unit space. However, the decision to use boxes or closed containers can make a big difference. Boxes are cheaper but they do not offer the same level of protection that closed containers do. It only takes one falling box to break multiple items in the storage unit. Closed containers can protect items from falls, water damage, and the climate of the storage facility. Both options provide great ways of keeping the individual items in the unit organized nicely. 

Preemptive Organization

Don’t leave the organization till the last minute! Write down the dimensions of the unit and create a 2D representation of how you will pack the unit if that helps you. At the very least you should get a solid picture of your storage inventory. Box up each item and label them before you get to the storage unit to make sure everything is where it should be to protect the items as best as possible. Throwing loose items into the storage unit can lead to lots of misuses or unused space. 

Padding

Odds are you will be keeping at least one or two fragile items in the storage unit. Space could be tight depending on how much stuff you are trying to fit into a storage unit resulting in some form of physical pressure exerted on each item in the unit. This is why it is so important to properly protect fragile items. A little bit of bubble wrap can go a long way for protection. Even some spare newspapers can do the job. Whatever padding you choose, make sure you are adding it onto each item you absolutely want to protect from breaking. Closed containers can help with this too!

Unused Space

Unused space is the thing you want to avoid most during the actual unit packing process. Take advantage of each inch of the space, you paid for each of them! If you can fit one or two more durable items into a small space it is worth it. Additionally, make sure each of your containers is packed to the brim, provided there are no fragile items inside.
