States That Have A Minimal Number of Basements

There are several states in the US that do not have basements for many reasons and the home can easily get crowded with items that need to be stored away, so there is a much larger need to rent or purchase a storage unit. The usual reasons that these following states do not have basements boils down to: Climate, Soil Type, Flooding Risks and History and Culture.

Here is a list of several state in the US that have less basements in newly-built homes and the reasons why:

1) Florida: Florida has a large aquifer system that spans around 100,000 square miles and provides water for many large cities. The groundwater’s very close to the surface in most parts of Florida and Southern Georgia. Because of the high water table and proximity to the ocean, it is impossible to dig out for a basement.

2) Alabama: The chief culprit is damp soil. The water table is very close under the ground making it hard to dig . Pumps, foundational water barriers are needed to construct a basement. In the past, the earlier homes had a bad history of flooding and foundational failure, so most newer homes are built with no basements.

3) Louisiana: Louisiana is a state also close to the water table so there is also a risk of flooding.

4) Eastern Texas: In Eastern Texas, there are several reasons as to why newly built homes to not have basements. Those include, no incentive for digging under the frost line, Texas has a high water table, there’s a high clay content in the soil, it’s difficult to dig in limestone bedrock and digging comes with a high additional cost.
