What to do First After Moving

For homebuyers, the first week after moving into a new home can be hectic. It can be overwhelming to start the process of unpacking and settling in, especially after a long move. Here are some tasks that you should check off your to-do list first.

Set Up Utilities 

One of the most important tasks to take care of when you first move into a house is to set up your utilities. While it’s best to handle getting your utilities set up before your move, this important task can sometimes get forgotten in the hustle and bustle of moving. If you forgot to transfer your services or set up accounts with local companies, it’s best to do them upon arrival. There’s nothing worse than trying to settle into a house that doesn’t have running water or electricity. 

Look for Necessary Repairs

When moving into a home for the first time. It’s likely that you will come across repairs that may need to be made (leaky faucet, holes in the walls, loose handrails, etc.) Before fully unpacking, it might be easier for you to get these things fixed up so your belongings aren’t in the way of any repairs.

Check the Locks

Security should be the most important aspect of any home. When moving into your home, one of the first things you should do is get your entrance locks replaced or rekeyed. Functional locks that work with the current keys can be simply rekeyed by a locksmith. However, if your locks are in poor condition, a replacement would be the best option.

Locate Utility Cut-offs

If you plan on making renovations to your new house, locating your home’s utility cut-offs should be one of the first things you do. These shut-off points include the main water valve, the gas-line valve and your circuit breaker/electrical panel.
